The flight recorders or " Black boxes "

They are recorders designed to conserve and protect, even after an accident, the information which is essential to understand what happened!

The FDR (Flight Data Recorder) records at least 25 hours of flight. It records between 6 (for the oldest aircraft) and around a thousand (for the most recent aircraft) different parameters per second. These parameters - speed, altitude, position of landing gear, engine thrust, etc. - are representative of the aircraft’s condition and of its movement.

The CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) records at least 30 minutes of sound (dialogue between the pilots, any alarms, noises) on four tracks. The recording lasts up to 2 hours for the most recent aircraft.

The recording is made on magnetic tape or, for current models, on electronic chips.
