Accident at Pau on 25 January 2007

On 25 January 2007 at 11 h 28, the Regional Airlines Fokker 100 registered F-GMPG that was undertaking a flight from Pau to Paris, under flight number AF 7775, had an accident during takeoff. The fifty passengers and four crew members were able to evacuate the airplane; the driver of a truck that was passing near the edge of the aerodrome was killed.

The BEA sent a six-man team to Pau yesterday to take the first steps in the investigation. This team was joined by a Dutch investigator accompanied by an advisor from Fokker.

Observation of the wreckage and the marks on the ground showed that the airplane first lifted off and was then subject to roll oscillations. Marks were found from a ground run that continued to the right of the landing lights. The airplane crashed through the aerodrome perimeter fence then passed over the road just below, striking the cab of the truck. It continued into a field, losing its two main landing gear assemblies and came to a stop about five hundred metres from the road. The two forward exits and one over-wing emergency exit were opened.

The flight recorders were recovered and are in good external condition.

The BEA recommends avoiding drawing any hasty conclusions on investigations that are under way. Experience has shown that such conclusions are often unfounded. In accordance with the provisions of French law n° 99-243 of 29 March 1999, the BEA will communicate any additional information as the technical investigation progresses.
